Monet's use of complementary colors make the piece seem like the colors vibrate. The yellow and orange flowers against the blue and violet background, along with the rich green leaves above the red tablecloth create an energy of lightness and brightness. Van Gogh compared his Sunflowers to Monet's. Here Monet adds interest by making the composition off-center to encourage visual interest.
